CrossFit Boxes on the Costa del Sol
Thinking about trying CrossFit? Here's what to expect from a box on the Costa del Sol, and how to find and book one through ClickPlay.
CrossFit on the Costa del Sol: What to Expect Before Your First WOD
CrossFit has built a genuine following on this coast over the last few years, and there are now dedicated boxes in Marbella, Elviria and Torremolinos, among others. If you've been curious but never actually walked into one, the format is different enough from a normal gym that it's worth knowing what you're in for before you book a class.
A box isn't a gym floor
A CrossFit "box", the term comes from the original bare-bones warehouse spaces the sport started in, is built around group classes, not solo training. Instead of picking your own exercises and working through them at your own pace, you turn up for a scheduled class, known as a WOD (workout of the day), that's the same for everyone in the room and led by a coach throughout. Equipment is usually barbells, kettlebells, gymnastics rings, rowers and open floor space, rather than the machines you'd find at a conventional gym.
What actually happens in a first class
Most boxes run a structured warm-up, a skill or strength component, then the main WOD, finishing with a cool-down, typically 45 to 60 minutes all in. Workouts are scaled to the individual, which is one of the more misunderstood things about the sport: a first-timer and a five-year veteran can do the same class with different weights, reps or movement variations, coached by the same instructor. Most boxes also expect (or require) a foundations or intro session before joining a normal class, specifically to cover the core lifts and movement standards safely.
The community factor
CrossFit's reputation for a strong community isn't just marketing, the class format means you're training with the same group of people multiple times a week, which is part of why it retains members better than a lot of solo-training gym floors. For expats and newer residents on the coast in particular, a box can end up being a faster way to build a social circle than almost anything else, simply because you see the same faces three or four times a week.
Where to try it on the Costa del Sol
CrossFit Marbella and CrossFit Elviria both serve the Marbella area, while CrossFit Playamar covers Torremolinos. All three are listed on ClickPlay if you want to compare locations and class times before booking a trial. Unlike a straightforward gym floor, it's worth checking each box's intro process directly, since foundations requirements and class scheduling vary more between CrossFit boxes than they do between standard gyms.
If you're after a more traditional gym floor rather than a class-based box, somewhere to lift on your own schedule without a group session: Pumping Hierro in Torremolinos and Uppsala Gym in Puerto de la Torre are the better fit; worth knowing the difference before you commit to either style of training.
How ClickPlay helps you compare
Because a CrossFit box is a bigger commitment than a drop-in gym session, usually a class schedule, sometimes a mandatory intro course, comparing your options properly before committing matters more here than almost anywhere else in this series. ClickPlay lets you search verified boxes by location, so you can compare Marbella, Elviria and Torremolinos options in one place rather than checking each box's own website and social media separately.
If CrossFit's been on your list to try, search ClickPlay to find a box near you and see how to book your first class.
